Two new exhibits opened at the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives last Sunday.
The Showcase Gallery is featuring some of the works of artists of Lake Edith. The event, running May 4-31, displays works from current artists and some from the past. Artwork from children and grandchildren of the original artists of Lake Edith are also highlighted. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 17 starting at 2 p.m.

In the Alcove Gallery, three quilts commemorating the life and work of explorer David Thompson are being exhibited May 4 to June 15. The exhibit is on loan for six weeks from the Columbia-Kootenay Cultural Alliance. The quilts, made by members of the Valley Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild of Invermere, feature various scenes depicting Thompson’s life and his explorations. Jasper and other local communities are participating in a variety of events between 2007 and 2012 to mark the bicentennial anniversary of Thompson’s presence in Alberta and British Columbia 200 years ago.
Thompson was in the Jasper area between 1810 and 1811 when he came through the Athabasca Pass.
